Origin
Dominoes were introduced to Europe in the 18th century, initially to Italy. They quickly spread throughout Europe and became one of the most popular games in family parlors and pubs.
The origin of dominoes is a mystery, but many accounts point to their origins in China. The Chu sz yam (Investigations on the Traditions of All Things) says they were invented in 1120 CE, and that they were circulated abroad by Emperor Hui Tsung and his son Kao Tsung.
The Chinese version was unique in that it represented the results of two six-sided dice. European dominoes differed from the Chinese game in that they did not have military-civilian suit distinctions. Also, the European game did not feature duplicates like the Chinese version.
Rules
There are a few basic rules for playing domino. These include drawing tiles from the stock and placing them on the table.
Before each game, one player shuffles the tiles face down. This ensures that the players’ hands are mixed thoroughly.
Once the tiles are shuffled, the player who won the right to draw first draws his hand.
Play then proceeds clockwise around the table, with each player adding a tile to an open end. The player to his left places his tile next, and so on.
A player can earn points by ending their turn with the open ends of their layout totaling a multiple of five. This is called the “Five-end Score.”
Materials
Throughout the centuries dominoes have been made from different materials such as plastic, wood, bone, and ivory. However, the most common material used today is polymer.
Modern commercial domino sets are primarily made of plastics, such as bakelite and phenolic resins. These are usually designed to approximate the look of ivory while still offering a more contemporary style and design.
They are usually available in various colors, including white with black pips and black with white pips. They have a smooth surface and are usually quite durable.
Although many players enjoy playing with traditional dominoes, the game has evolved to incorporate a variety of new and exciting materials. Some sets are made from marbles, granite, or wood. Others are made from ceramic clay or frosted glass and crystal.
Variations
There are a number of variations of dominoes, the most popular being blocking and scoring games. These games involve matching tiles in a layout to create particular configurations, or to make the sum of the pips on the ends of the line equal some specified total.
Blocking is a simple version of dominoes where each player begins with a tile which starts the line of play and alternately extends it with one matching tile at each of its two ends. A player who cannot do this passes.
There are also more complex versions of dominoes which have a range of rules and mechanisms incorporated in them. These include positional games such as Bergen where the goal is to create a line of dominoes with adjacent ends that are identical (e.g., 5 to 5) or some other specified total.
Scoring
The scoring system in domino is based on the number of open ends on the layout. If the sum of the open ends is a multiple of 5, divide by 5 and that is your score.
The rules of scoring in this game are very similar to those of Muggins, except that each end of a single domino may be played only once. After that, the numbers on each domino are “cut off” for scoring purposes, allowing you to build along a new line of play.
This method of scoring is called “stitched up”. A player’s goal in each turn is to place a domino that will make one of the exposed halves of the chain show a number matching a number on one of the tiles already set.
